This body of work, The Storm  I, is a response to the world unfolding on my laptop, and the world unfolding outside my door.  The 24 hour news cycle hits us with a new crisis every time we click on. Conversations on social media bring them very close to home. This is the storm that we are battered by, I've been taking these things into mind and going in to the studio processing the information storm.  Making figurative paintings that distill contemporary events into a body that is experiencing them. The cold crossing pictures born out of the migrant crisis are a montage. People seen in found photographs transposed to an imagined landscape spanning the border between Canada and the USA. The end results are unsettling and surreal as I imagine the experience would be.  Then the I.  When I step away from the computer and out my door, I'm met by forest and sea. Fruit trees in the garden. Events unfolding in real time. The paintings from the I collection are seamless. Light on things that can be touched and tasted. A plum, a lover, a remembered kiss on my neck.  The technology of our times means that we live, really live, in both of these spaces simultaneously. This body of work examines that, and with the closing piece recognizes that the two spaces are merging.  The last finished painting for this series is Sea Side/This Side. It was intended as a diptych, with one painting of a girl I know on the sandy beach by my house, her coat and skirt evoking a lifejacket and zodiac, facing east. A second painting of a girl I don't know in a life jacket and zodiac facing west. As I was painting the first work, the radio announced that Donald Trump had pulled out of the Paris climate change accord. I flooded the beach, and abandoned the idea of the second painting because it felt like only a matter of time before the first girl was the second.
